The topics at the bargaining table underwent a swift transformation in March 2020 to novel topics never before discussed at the table. In many ways, employers and unions shared common interests involving health and safety, although not without differences. And even now, almost two years later, the parties agree on many controversial issues such as vaccines, testing and masks. Assuming that most COVID-related issues have been resolved, will issues and disputes at the bargaining table revert to the “before times,” or have labor relations undergone an existential transformation? We can assume that compensation, in all its forms, and benefits will remain front and center, but in what way? Will attraction and retention of staff be front and center for school employers? Will that lead to a common interest in focusing on improving starting salaries? Enhanced benefits? More robust support for new staff?
